Adult Name Change Petition

Fla. Stat. § 68.07

Petition the Circuit Court to legally change your name in Florida under § 68.07.

Florida § 68.07 governs adult name changes. To legally change your name:

  1. File a Petition for Change of Name in the Circuit Court of the county where you reside;
  2. Pay the filing fee (varies by county, typically $400–$500);
  3. Attend a hearing (courts may waive the hearing in uncontested cases); and
  4. Obtain a certified copy of the court order to update your ID, Social Security card, and other records.

Publication requirement (§ 68.07(4)): In most cases you must publish notice of the name change in a local newspaper once a week for 4 consecutive weeks unless the court waives publication for safety reasons (e.g., domestic violence survivor).
